Playwright Nambi E. Kelley brings the book to life through the character of Bigger Thomas and his inner thoughts personified as the Black Rat. Bigger is a black man living in 1930’s Southside Chicago. When he finally gets a good job for the wealthy Dalton family, he finds himself in a precarious situation with the Dalton daughter, Mary. After a fateful decision, Bigger is sent spiraling. He is misrepresented and underestimated. His only decision is to turn inwards and listen to himself. Using W.E.B. DuBois’ theory of double consciousness as a guiding principle, this fresh 90-minute adaptation of Native Son focuses on the landscape inside the mind of Bigger Thomas, bringing the power of Richard Wright’s novel to life for a whole new generation.
